About this product

“By the Loobular Lake, where the Humplepuffs graze, there lived a young Smed by the name of Janet…” From the unparalleled duo of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo, comes an out-of-this-world adventure that’s as timely as it is charming. This “smash hit” story is a beautiful celebration of love, friendship, and the joy of embracing our differences.

The Story

The Smeds (who are red) and the Smoos (who are blue) have been told for generations never to play with one another. So, when a young Smed named Janet and a young Smoo named Bill fall in love and fly off into space together, their warring families are forced to unite. As they journey through the galaxy in search of the runaway pair, the red and blue families discover they have much more in common than they ever imagined. In a truly “happiest of happy endings,” they reunite to celebrate the arrival of the very first purple baby!

Why we love it

  • A Lesson in Harmony: This story serves as a gentle, heartwarming metaphor for overcoming prejudice and finding common ground through shared love and family.

  • Cosmic Illustrations: Axel Scheffler’s vibrant artwork brings a whole new galaxy to life, filled with strange planets, exotic plants, and weird and wonderful alien creatures.

  • Perfect Bedtime Rhymes: Julia Donaldson’s masterful use of rhythm and made-up alien words makes this a joy to read aloud, keeping children engaged from the first page to the last.

  • Award-Winning Pedigree: Following the legacy of Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo, this book has also been adapted into a beloved BBC animated special.
