About this product
“Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay, were scarecrows who decided to marry one day.” From the powerhouse pairing of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo, comes a truly “smashing” story of devotion, adventure, and one very grand wedding list. First published in 2014, this tender tale has become a farmyard favourite for readers of all ages.
The Story
Harry and Betty are a perfect team, and they want to have a wedding that “no one will ever forget.” To make it happen, they create a list of five essential items: a dress of white feathers, a necklace of shells, a wedding ring, a bell, and some pink flowers. While Harry sets off on a brave quest to find the ring, a smooth-talking, cigar-smoking scarecrow named Reginald Rake tries to take his place. Will Harry make it back in time to save the day and marry his Betty O’Barley?
Why we love it
-
A Tale of Loyalty: Beyond the farmyard fun, the story is a beautiful exploration of commitment and trust, proving that true love can withstand even the most persistent of villains.
-
Rhythmic Delight: Julia Donaldson’s masterful rhyming verse makes this book a joy to read aloud, with a pace that perfectly captures the excitement of Harry’s journey.
-
Expressive Artwork: Axel Scheffler fills the pages with charming countryside details, from the determined look on Harry’s face to the hilariously arrogant Reginald Rake.
-
Warmth & Humour: Woven with “warmth and humour,” it’s a story that ignites the imagination, making it a “must-have” for any collection of the duo’s classic works.
